Road Improvement Plans OK'ed for 7 Streets
by Tom Boud
At its Aug. 20 meeting, the Borough Council passed a resolution for the 2008 borough road improvement program.
The package entails repaving and drainage upgrades where necessary, on seven streets. They are Alexandria Court, Harrison Court, Miller Avenue, Pershing Place, Pompton Avenue, Verbickas Drive, and Weston Place. The West Paterson Boys and Girls Club parking lot will also be redone, according to Borough Administrator Kevin Galland.
According to Galland, the borough will hire Kelly Excavating & Paving of Kenvil through the Morris County Cooperative Pricing Council.
The organization is a reduced price bulk quantity purchasing forum for member municipalities. The price for the multi-byway facelift shall not exceed $400,000, and is funded through a 2008 bond ordinance.
In other news, Galland said Jenicar Builders Contractors Co. Inc. of Kearny will begin the Rose Place reconstruction project shortly, under a $180,478.25 contract. The undertaking entails road repaving, existing curb repair, and new curbing where required. Some drainage inlets will also be fixed.
Galland said a state Department of Transportation (DOT) grant covers $165,000 of the bill. He said the remainder comes from a current year bond ordinance.
In addition, the Hillcrest Avenue reconstruction project has been underway since early August, being done under a $317,856.53 agreement with Jenicar. The redo includes curbs, drainage improvements, and fresh asphalt. Galland added a DOT handout covers $200,000 of the expense. He said the rest is bankrolled through a 2007 bond ordinance.
According to Galland, the contractor, as of last week, was performing curb labor, pending arrival of drainage pipes. With progress proceeding well, the borough expects the job to be completed before deadline.
The administrator added that, by standard policy, all roadway initiatives are to be finished within 120 days of groundbreaking.
At the meeting, Mayor Pat Lepore said West Paterson, despite its fiscal challenges, maintains an aggressive road resurfacing agenda. He said the 15 year all town streets revamp objective is being realized.
“We’re actually a couple of streets ahead of schedule. I don’t know of any other town that has such a plan implemented and operated,” he said, referring to local area municipalities.
